Physical Education at Holbrook

Intent

At Holbrook, we provide a unique and child-centred approach to PE which enables every child to succeed at their own level by being engaged, supported and challenged. We are proud to be a ‘Real Legacy’ school and the approach we follow is based on the 6 key abilities that children need to be successful across the PE, Sport and wider curriculum. These skills are: personal, social, cognitive, creative, physical, and health and fitness and align with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Personalised and interactive learning journeys support our children to develop at their own pace and reach their goals.

Implementation

EYFS

Pupils are provided with a wide range of opportunities, both indoors and outdoors, to develop their core strength, stability, agility, balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness. These are based on a mixture of gross and fine motor skills.

KS1

Pupils focus on developing their fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing and catching) by accessing a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.

KS2

Pupils continue to apply and develop their previously learnt skills and learn how to use them in different ways. They further their abilities in communicating, collaborating and competing with others. On an individual level, they have chance to work on their ‘personal best’ and develop an understanding about how evaluating their skills can help them make improvements.

Impact

As a result, children leave Holbrook with physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to be able to achieve in PE, Sport and life.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

Holbrook offers a wide variety of extra-curricular Sports activities provided by both staff and external providers. These take place before, during and after the school day and details of these are sent out each term.

The school also takes part in an extensive range of fixtures, festivals and tournaments against other schools that are arranged by different local providers, including the District Council. These provide both competitive and inclusive opportunities for the children and we pride ourselves on as many children as possible having the chance to access these across the year.
