Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education at Holbrook

Intent

PSHE is a vital area of the Holbrook curriculum and our 5 core values (cooperation, honesty, respect, responsibility and tolerance) underpin everything we do.
At Holbrook, we want pupils to thrive in a time of rapid change. With new and unpredictable opportunities and challenges constantly emerging. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE will develop the qualities and characteristics children need to thrive as individuals and members of society.

PSHE contributes to personal development by helping children to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.

Implementation

Using the PSHE association's thematic model, PSHE is taught through the core themes of 'health and wellbeing', 'relationships' and 'living in the wider world'. RSE is taught in the context of the school's aims and values and is carefully interweaved through the PSHE curriculum, ensuring that the topics are appropriate for the children.

Impact

Children are able to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the issues that are part of growing up.

Children gain the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

Children are prepared for puberty, and have an understanding of their development and the importance of health and hygiene. Children develop feelings of self-respect, confidence, a strong identity and empathy. 

School Leaders

School council - Our School Council is made up of one representative from each class from Year 2 upwards. The School Council have regular meetings with Mr Holmes, when they discuss ideas for improving the school. Each school Council member reports back to their class and brings ideas and suggestions from the children to the meeting.

Assemblies – As part of our assemblies we explore and reflect on PSHE themes including our core values, local and global issues.

Eco-schools and ambassadors – we are proud to be part of a global programme engaging millions of children across 67 countries that improves pupils’ skills, raises environmental awareness, improves the school environment and also creates financial savings for schools as well as a whole host of other benefits.

Anti-bullying ambassadors - our trained anti-bullying ambassadors support anti-bullying across the school, working with the children to raise awareness and understanding of the effects of bullying.
